A wonderfully glamorous unbranded late 1940s to early 1950s evening bag constructed from fluid gold-tone articulated metal mesh.

The bag has a rectangular gold-tone frame and an elegant double kiss-lock clasp set with clear paste stones. A long flexible snake-chain strap allows it to be carried over the shoulder or held as an evening purse.

The finely linked metal mesh creates a beautiful liquid effect, catching the light and changing between warm gold, rose-gold and silvery tones as it moves. The mesh forms both the exterior and interior of the bag, with no separate fabric lining.

Although requiring some restoration, this remains an extremely decorative original evening bag and would make an appealing collector’s piece, display item, theatrical accessory or repair project.

Condition

Fair vintage condition and offered as a collector’s or restoration piece.
The metal mesh remains beautifully reflective but has considerable age-related wear. There are areas of distortion and creasing, scattered discolouration, darkened links and several small openings or losses within the mesh.

There is more substantial damage around the lower corners and side seams, where the mesh has pulled apart and become frayed. Some links are loose or missing, so the bag should be handled carefully and may require repair before regular use.

The frame has scratches, tarnish, spotting, discolouration and areas of verdigris. The snake-chain strap also displays surface wear and tarnish.

The clear stones in the clasp are present but show some clouding and age-related wear. Please confirm that the fastening closes securely before listing.
