Vintage 1930s British Made Chinoiserie Brocade Envelope Clutch Bag – Blue Gold Evening Purse
Description
A beautiful original 1930s envelope clutch bag, British made and covered in richly woven blue, gold and silver-toned chinoiserie brocade.
The wonderfully detailed fabric depicts a romanticised East Asian landscape populated by figures carrying baskets and walking among trees, stylised buildings and geometric garden forms. Different weaving techniques create areas of raised texture and subtle variations in sheen, allowing the scene to change as it catches the light.
The bag has a classic oversized envelope silhouette with a softly curved flap and discreet press-stud fastening. It opens to reveal a pale champagne-coloured lining with gathered sections and several useful internal pockets.
An original woven label inside reads “British Made”.
This is an exceptionally atmospheric surviving accessory from the interwar period, when chinoiserie textiles and East Asian-inspired decorative motifs were highly fashionable in European interiors and dress. Its restrained powder-blue, silver and muted gold palette is particularly elegant and would work beautifully as an evening bag, vintage bridal accessory or display piece.
