Description

A fabulous late 1960s / early 1970s pure wool dress by Carnegie of London, made in England.

Cut in a beautifully structured dark charcoal brown wool, the dress features a wonderfully graphic woven spot design in warm burnt orange and cream. Contrasting ochre edging around the round neckline and cuffs adds another distinctly late-1960s touch.

The silhouette is superb: long sleeves, fitted and shaped through the bodice and waist with beautifully constructed curved seams, before opening into a gently flared skirt. A central front inverted pleat reveals a contrasting ochre panel beneath as the dress moves.

The dress fastens with a long concealed zip running down the centre back.

The original Carnegie of London label remains in place and gives the size as UK 14, with bust 35½–37" and hips 37½–39". A separate label confirms Pure New Wool.

A really characterful piece of British vintage fashion with a strong late-60s modernist feel — the sort of dress that looks deceptively simple until you start noticing the tailoring, colour combinations and construction.

Condition

Fair vintage condition / restoration piece. The dress presents beautifully overall but does have a number of small holes and areas of wear to the wool, as photographed. There are further scattered smaller areas of wear visible across the garment. These have been deliberately left unrepaired so that the new owner can choose their preferred method of restoration.

The structure, wonderful original fabric, labels and overall appearance make this a very worthwhile survivor despite its flaws. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
