A beautiful original 1950s handmade dress in an unusual painterly floral print of purple, lilac, pink and blue-green.

This is a wonderfully feminine example of everyday 1950s dressmaking, with a neatly fitted bodice, defined 26” waist and a generously cut skirt creating that unmistakable mid-century silhouette.

The fabric is particularly lovely. Rather than a traditional ditsy floral, the print has a softer, almost impressionistic quality, with scattered purple and pink flowers against a richly patterned blue-green ground.

Short sleeves and a gently rounded neckline keep the bodice beautifully simple, allowing the print and silhouette to take centre stage. The skirt falls with plenty of natural fullness from the waist, creating movement without needing the exaggerated proportions of a formal circle skirt.

With no modern reproduction label and evidence of handmade construction, this is a lovely surviving piece of genuine mid-century dressmaking — individual, beautifully wearable and now around 70 years old.

Considering its approximately 70-year age, this handmade dress has been remarkably well preserved, with only minimal signs of previous wear noted.
The fabric remains vibrant and the dress presents beautifully.

Styling
This is a lovely example of a genuine 1950s dress that doesn't need to be styled as costume.
Wear it simply with ballet flats or low heels and a cardigan for an authentic everyday mid-century look, or add heels, a structured handbag and vintage jewellery for an occasion.

A petticoat could be worn underneath if you want to emphasise the fullness of the skirt, but I actually love the softer natural silhouette shown here.

It would make a beautiful summer occasion dress, afternoon-tea dress or simply a very special piece of original 1950s fashion to wear and enjoy.
